Section 4.4 Lab – Cryptography and the Caesar Cipher

Objective

  • Students will be able to encrypt and decrypt messages using the Caesar Cipher so they can develop a basic understanding of cryptography principles.

Assignment:

  1. Follow along with the in-class demonstration to learn how the Caesar Cipher (also known as the Shift Cipher) works, and how you can use it to encode and decode text messages.
  2. Follow the Instructable to learn how keywords can be incorporated with this cipher to make it more difficult to decrypt.
  3. I have placed 8 encrypted messages around the perimeter of the room. Work together to decrypt them all! Submit a Google Doc to my Google Classroom page with the decrypted messages by the end of the day tomorrow.
  4. Some of the decrypted messages lead to treasure! The first to decode each message gets the goods!
  5. Remember, you may work together, but each student must submit their own original document to the Google Classroom page by tomorrow to receive credit for the lab. Don’t put more than one name on your document, and don’t submit someone else’s document as your own!

Section 2.2 Lab – Kali Linux in VirtualBox VM Installation

Students will install and configure a specialized desktop operating system in a VirtualBox VM environment.

Assignment:

  1. This week we will be working in the classroom with a specialized Operating System installation. We will be using a Virtual Machine software called VirtualBox to installing a specialized OS (Kali Linux) in a virtual environment that we will use in the second half of our course.
  2. I will distribute the required files in class today. If you did not receive the files or if you were not in attendance today, you will need to see me and I will show you where to download the files directly.
  3. In your Downloads folder, you should have a subfolder called “VirtualBox 6.0”. Inside this folder, you should have four files: a VirtualBox .dmg file, a Kali Linux 2019 .ova file, an Oracle_VM .vbox-extpack file, and a UserManual.pdf file. If you are missing any of these files, please see me immediately to get them.
  4. I will instruct you in-class on Thursday how to install VirtualBox VM in OSX, and how to load the VirtualBox extension pack and the preconfigured Kali Linux package.
  5. We will walk through the configuration and testing of Kali on Friday, and I will explain some of the unique and powerful features of this specialized flavor of the Linux operating system.
  6. Kali Linux will be required for the second half of the class, and you must complete your VirtualBox VM Kali Linux installation in class by Friday, October 25th to receive credit for this Lab Activity.

Chap. 1 Lab – PC Hardware Disassembly, Inventory & Reassembly

Objective:

  • I can demonstrate my understanding of PC Hardware fundamentals by disassembling a PC, inventorying the parts and successfully reassembling the PC.

Assignment:

  1. This week, we will visit the lab, where each student will be allowed to pick out a PC to use in their lab activities throughout the year.
  2. Each student should first assemble their PC, connect it to power, boot to the Windows operating system and confirm that it is in working order.
  3. Examine the computer and peripheral components, front and back.
    1. In a Google Doc or Form, create an inventory list of the external components. Provide the component name, manufacturer, description, characteristics and any identification numbers available (serial #, part #, model #).
  4. Observe the boot process and determine the following information:
    1. What is the speed of the CPU?
    2. How much RAM is installed?
  5. Next, each student will open up their PC, and remove and inventory (record any available information such as manufacturer, model, serial # and capacity) all easily removable components:
    1. Hard Drive
    2. DVD-Rom
    3. RAM sticks
  6. Students will acquire a philips head screwdriver from the tool cabinet and proceed to carefully remove the motherboard and power supply.
  7. Students will use canned air to clean the PC case of lint and debris to ensure optimal airflow.
  8. Students will reassemble the PC and its external peripherals, and reboot it to test its operation.
  9. Submit the completed PC Inventory document to the Google Classroom assignment labeled “Chap. 1 Lab” by Monday, Sept. 5th.
